Lenses and New Technology

The spectacle lens market has become as innovative in its material design as the contact lens manufacturers. Spectacle wearers can now choose from a wide range of high index glass and plastic lenses allowing greater powers with less thickness even in larger frames. Every lens can receive a variety of coatings and tints to enhance the lens comfort as well as the looks.

We would recommend an anti-reflection coating and an aspheric design of the lens to provide the ultimate in vision clarity, reduction in glare especially at night and a great cosmetic effect. We notice that those working in the industry invariably choose such a lens design for themselves, clearly a testament to their advantages.

Lens design has also enabled those of us needing extra help with reading (presbyopes) to enjoy spectacles fit for the job without advertising our age by wearing bifocals. The new progressive lenses (around a 100 designs at the last count) can now be selected for the type of work and lifestyle that they will be used for. Good dispensing Opticians can select from hard and soft designs (a name given by the suppliers) and can even generate lenses especially surfaced to your own facial measurements and movements. One of our staff says they are so good it’s like wearing spectacles that appear to change power whatever distance he is looking at. These “Free Form Varifocals” aren’t cheap but they give exceptional visual results without the image swim effects that some cheaper options can provide.

There is certainly a lens type for all activities and work positions. Read about Vision and VDU usage.

Finally make the finished product last a bit longer by hard coating the lens to reduce scratches but if you want a slight tint to soften the lens look remember to ask before hard coating otherwise you will have sealed the lens.
