College publishes Media alert: Link between glaucoma and the contraceptive pill
The College has alerted its members to a media story published in a variety of newspapers yesterday including The Metro, The Times, The Daily Mirror, The Guardian and The Telegraph.
Prof Shan Lin from the University of California has carried out research which claims that long-term contraceptive pill use doubles the chances of getting glaucoma. The results of the research are based on data that was collected between 2005 and 2008 on 3,406 women aged over 40 who had been using the contraceptive pill for three years or longer.
The MRHA has disputed the findings saying that a link with glaucoma has not been confirmed.†
Whilst the College finds this interesting, it believes that more research is needed in this area.
